Over 80 houses damaged

Over 80 houses were damaged from strong winds and trees that collapsed in various parts of the country this evening.The Disaster Management Center said that 4o houses were damaged in Gampaha from the strong winds but there were no details of any casualties. The DMC said that another 40 houses were also damaged in other parts of the country from trees that were uprooted by strong winds. The Gulf of Mannar sea area and sea areas off Western, Southern, Southeastern and Eastern coasts will be fairly rough at times, particularly during the showers. (Colombo Gazette) It also said that winds will be from North-easterly direction and speed will be 20 – 40 km/hr. The speed may increase up to 50 km/hr at times in the Gulf of Mannar sea area and in the sea areas off the Western, Southern, Southeastern and Eastern coasts particularly during showers. The DMC said that another 40 houses were also damaged in other parts of the country from trees that were uprooted by strong winds.Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Eastern, Northcentral and Uva provinces and in the Hambantota district.Meanwhile the department of meteorology urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by lightning activities.
