Police Impersonator Reported Fake Crimes, Cops Say

first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York A North Lawrence man has been accused of repeatedly calling 911 to report a fake shooting, fire and traffic stop over the past three months while twice claiming to be a police officer.Nassau County police arrested Steven Torres on charges of falsely reporting an incident and criminal impersonation.Police said the 21-year-old first identified himself as a Nassau cop to a 911 operator when he called to ask for assistance with a traffic stop in Lynbrook on Sept. 18—a report that responding officers quickly termed a hoax.Two weeks later, on Oct. 3, Torres allegedly called 911 again to report a nonexistent Cedarhurst house fire. And then last Thursday, police said Torres called 911 a third time claiming to be a New York City Police sergeant while falsely reporting a shooting in Inwood.Torres will be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.last_img read more
